Lawrence Kauvar is the founder of Telik (originally called Terrapin Technologies), where he served as VP, Chief Scientific Officer for 10 years following academic training in Drosophila molecular genetics at Harvard (BA), Yale (PhD under Alan Garen), Caltech (with Seymour Benzer) and UCSF (with Tom Kornberg). Telik completed an IPO in August 2000 [Nasdaq: TELK]. Kauvar's major invention at Telik was the chemical classification system that constitutes the company's core technology, now being used both internally and via partnerships with academia, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He also played a primary role in inventing Telik's first two clinical drug candidates, both in the area of oncology (in Phase III and Phase I respectively), and he is a co-inventor on Telik's initial patents relating to insulin receptor activators, for which an IND is being prepared. He is currently the Founder and President of Trellis Bioscience, a startup in the area of functional genomics. |
